This occurs gradually (elongated nuclei in medulla, rounder in pons and midbrain), b) The sensory nucleus of CN5 does not break up but is continuous from spinal cord through midbrain, c) The motor nucleus of CN5 is confined to the pons, d) There are three sensory nuclei in the brain stem - the vestibulocochlear complex (CN8), sensory nucleus of CN5, and nucleus solitarius. e) Solitarius is a visceral sensory nucleus (CNs 7, 9, 10). 0 The sensory nucleus of CN5 is somatic sensory (CNs 5, 7, 9, 10 and possibly others - but the predominant input is from CN5). g) aMbiguus is Motor (CNs 9, 10) h) Nucleus solitarius is solitarily confined to the medulla as are nucleus ambiguus, the nucleus of CN12, the dorsal motor nucleus of CN10 and the salivatory nuclei, i) Nuc. 8 overlaps the medulla and pons. DM, Dorsal motor (visceral) nuc. 10; SL, Nucleus solitarius. A, nucleus ambiguus; ML, medial lemniscus; S, nucleus solitarius; SC, spinocerebellar traci;ST, spinothalamic tract; 3, 4, CNs 3 and 4; 5, nucleus and tract CN5; 6, 7, 8, nuclei CNs 6, 7, 8; 10, dorsal motor nucleus CN10; 12, nucleus CN12. Do not be upset by the fancy name of "nucleus solitarius" used to describe this visceral sensory nucleus.
